Wer ist eigentlich Ulla Saar? Und was mag/macht sie für Kinderbücher? Drei Fragen an die Illustratorin aus Estland.

– How did you start to illustrate books for children (and young people)?

I guess it was written in the stars. Already during my studies in the Art University my fellow students said that my live model drawings resembled childrens books illustrations. So I had been thinking of illustrating childrens books subconciously, apparently and once the opportunity presented itself, on 2013, I jumped on it and have not got off the bandwagon ever since. Right now I’m illustrating my 10th and 11th book simultaneously.

Ich glaube, das steht in den Sternen. Schon während meines Studiums an der Kunsthochschule meinten meine Studienfreunde, dass meine Modellzeichnungen Kinderbuchillustrationen ähneln würden. Ich hatte wohl unbewusst immer schon im Kopf, Kinderbücher zu illustrieren. Und als sich 2013 tatsächlich eine Gelegenheit bot, habe ich die Chance ergriffen und bislang daran festgehalten. Im Augenblick illustriere ich zeitgleich mein zehntes und elftes Buch.

– Which of your books should everybody be familiar with (and why)?

All of them? Haha. They are all like my children, although very different. Some you couldn’t tell were even related because I use different techniques very freely basing on text and the feeling I get from the text when I’m reading it. I would hope there is something for everyone there so feel free to discover!

Mit allen? Haha. Sie sind alle meine Babys, auch wenn sie sehr unterschiedlich sind. Bei einigen kann man nicht einmal sagen, dass sie zueinander in irgendeiner Verbindung stehen, da ich verschiedene Techniken benutze, die sich sehr frei am Text und an dem Gefühl, das ich beim Lesen des Texts bekomme, orientieren. Ich hoffe, dass für jeden etwas dabei ist – es sind alle herzlich eingeladen, meine Bücher zu entdecken!

– Which theme or motif would you love to work on in a children’s book some day?

I’d love to illustrate a completely abstract book for kids. Children think in such abstract ways and as my son is doing a creative writing course, perhaps I could ask him to write me a story to illustrate!

Ich würde sehr gern ein vollkommen abstraktes Buch für Kinder illustrieren. Kinder denken in so wunderbar abstrakter Weise; und vielleicht könnte ich ja meinen Sohn fragen, ob er mir eine Geschichte zum Illustrtieren schreibt – er besucht gerade einen Kurs für kreatives Schreiben.
